Unfortunately, pain is part of life for everyone. Sciatic pain makes life very uncomfortable. A person may deal with it on a daily basis. However, it is possible something can be done about it. So, where can a person begin to find relief?

Many think their first step should be to visit their family physician. Some are reluctant to do this because they basically know what will happen. They will be given medication to dull the pain, exercises to do, and lifestyle changes to make. This is not the answer everyone is looking for. This may alleviate some pain, but it is not addressing the root cause of sciatica. Are there any other options? Before we discuss that, let's take a deeper look into what sciatica is, so that we can understand how to treat it.

Symptoms associated with sciatic pain are the following:
  • Pain that radiates from your lower spine to your buttock and down the back of the leg
  • Tingling or pins and needles feeling
  • Feeling numb
  • Weakness or pain in your leg or foot
  • Usually, only one side is affected
  • Problems moving your leg
  • Worsens after sitting for long periods

What is sciatica? The sciatic nerve extends from your lower back through the buttocks and down the back of the leg. It consists of five nerve roots that are connected to the spine. When one of these nerve roots becomes irritated or compressed pain is the result. Some things that can cause this to happen are pregnancy, spinal disc herniation, car accidents, tumors, spinal stenosis, or piriformis syndrome.

One area of treatment that has seen much success in dealing with sciatic pain is that of upper cervical chiropractic care. Even though the pain is being felt in the lower extremities, the problem may lie in the upper part of the neck. A misalignment here of only ¼ of a millimeter can be putting undue pressure on the brainstem causing the body not to communicate properly with the brain. By getting a proper adjustment to this area, many have reported relief of symptoms.

When Vertigo and Migraines Combine in Tulsa, OK

Vestibular migraines are one of the most debilitating forms of migraine headaches. Dizziness and disorientation possibly occur alongside traditional migraine symptoms. This condition is most common in women between 20-40 and can be compounded by stress and hormonal fluctuations. Common symptoms that occur include (1) -

- Spontaneous vertigo (with possible nausea or vomiting)
- Sound sensitivity, ringing in the ear
- Neck pain with muscle spasms in upper cervical muscles
- Motion intolerance (of eyes, head, body)

Vestibular migraines are unique in that the vertigo symptoms may occur without a headache. (2) Traditional management involves NSAIDs and possible prescriptions to reduce signals from the inner ear. When looking for treatment options, it is important to consider the true cause of your vestibular dysfunction in order to find resolution.

How is my spine related to my dizziness?

Your spine is designed to protect your spinal cord. Your spinal cord carries signals to and from your brain. When the top bone in your neck (atlas) is misaligned, this can create pressure within your spinal cord at the base of your neck. This can affect joint position signals going to and from your brainstem, potentially leading to vertigo symptoms.

Dr. Hanson and I have received extensive training in NUCCA. NUCCA is a chiropractic technique aimed at precisely adjusting the atlas vertebra. Through this gentle correction, the atlas is re-aligned. Proper atlas alignment allows for reduced spinal cord pressure, restoring normal joint position signals to and from the brain. This may reduce symptoms of vertigo.

Mayheu et al. described a case of a 23-year-old female patient that presented with vertigo symptoms 5 months following a concussion. After receiving a specific atlas adjustment, she noticed her vertigo disappeared. After two months of care, she stated that she had complete resolution of her vertigo since her first atlas correction. (3)

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: New Name and Natural Relief

Chronic fatigue syndrome, until recently, has been thought of as a psychological disorder. Friends, family, and, even, those in the medical field did not recognize it as a real, physical problem. Until February of 2015. It was then that a report by the Institute of Medicine declared chronic fatigue, also referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis, as an actual disease. Before this, it was believed that people with perfectionist personalities, laziness, or maladaptive beliefs were the ones suffering from chronic fatigue symptoms.

Because chronic fatigue has such a wide variety of symptoms, it is suggested that the term systemic exertion intolerance disease is more appropriate. What are the actual symptoms?
  • Information is processed much slower in the brain
  • Cardiovascular function is impaired, even after exercise
  • Blurred vision or lightheadedness upon standing (orthostatic intolerance)
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Abnormal sleep patterns
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Tissues feeling stiff and swollen
  • Recurring headaches

Chronic Fatigue Treatment
Even though chronic fatigue is now recognized as an organic disease, the medical field has still not found a cure for it. It is treated by focusing on symptoms and treating them individually, rather than looking for an underlying cause. Doctors suggest such things as dietary changes, supplements, medications, regular and moderate exercise, acupuncture, and cognitive behavioral therapy. What about a form of treatment that comes along with no side effects and can give long-lasting relief?

One area that is seeing success in treating patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis is that of upper cervical chiropractic care. This type of chiropractic is only practiced by a few select doctors worldwide. We focus on a misalignment that may have occurred in the upper neck. Once this misalignment is detected by the latest techniques and then corrected, we often see positive results in our patients. Improvements in various systems of the body are seen, allowing the patient to sleep better, feel less pain, have increased energy, and experience an overall better life quality.

As many as 20 million people suffer from fibromyalgia according to estimates. A woman is 10 times as likely to experience fibromyalgia as a man. Symptoms are not limited to pain. Patients also experience cognitive issues (nicknamed fibro fog) as well as sleep problems.

When a person has fibromyalgia, chemical and neurological changes take place. These result in the body experiencing pain in an abnormal way. Because of the nature of this condition, healthcare providers often struggle to reach a diagnosis and to provide treatment. At Brooks Spinal Care, we take a different approach.

Rather than providing prescription medications to help a patient cope with pain, we use NUCCA techniques to provide natural relief with no side effects. Why is upper cervical chiropractic effective at treating fibromyalgia?

When the atlas vertebra becomes misaligned, this can result in many chronic health problems. It can affect both the chemicals produced by the brain as well as affect neurological connections in the body. These two factors both contribute the abundance of pain felt by fibromyalgia sufferers.

When the atlas is properly realigned, internal communications can be restored. As a result, pain sensing can return to normal. This can also relieve cognitive problems that result from a misalignment causing blood and spinal fluid flow issues. The result is a reversal of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. A few simple diagnostic tests can reveal whether or not a misalignment is causing your symptoms.
