Vertigo seems to occur randomly. A patient experiences dizzy spells that could last hours. A person’s surroundings may seem to whirl around them. What causes vertigo? What can you do to take control of this debilitating condition? Read on to learn more.

Conditions that Result in Vertigo

- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BBPV) – This is often shortened to positional vertigo and is the most common form of this condition. It is not life threatening. Most who suffer from positional vertigo experience episodes that last for just a few moments, although episodes may occasional be longer. Vertigo may seem to renew every time the patient moves his or her head. Other symptoms may include nausea, light-headedness, and falls. This is especially true if vertigo comes on suddenly or extends for a long period of time.

- Meniere's Disease – This is a more serious condition that results when fluid builds up in the ears. Periods of vertigo may be extended. Other symptoms include tinnitus, hearing loss, and ear stuffiness. Generally, this condition just affects one ear. It most commonly occurs in middle-aged people, starting at age 40.

- Acute Vestibular Neuritis – This term refers to inner ear inflammation. Accompanying symptoms include balance issues, nausea, and vomiting. When the inner ear becomes inflamed, it may result in hearing loss. When this occurs, the condition is referred to as Labyrinthitis. Fortunately, inner ear inflammation usually clears up with bedrest, and hearing loss should not be permanent.

The Upper Cervical Solution to Vertigo
Does your vertigo last for moments, hours, or days? How do you usually treat your vertigo? For many, bedrest until the feeling passes is the only solution. But have you considered seeing an upper cervical chiropractor?

Bedrest may work, but it doesn’t address the cause of vertigo or prevent future occurrences. Many, however, have had the frequency of their vertigo decreased or even eliminated totally with the help of an upper cervical chiropractor. This is because C1 and C2 misalignments are known to create fluid to build up in a person’s inner ear.

Dr. Scott Hanson is an upper cervical chiropractor in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dr, Hanson has been specially trained to diagnose and fix misalignments of the C1 and C2. Once proper alignment is restored, you may find that your inner ear can function properly, completely eliminating cases of vertigo.
